“We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh –
As I round the corner to finish my final year in Naturopathic and Chinese Medical School, I’ve been thinking a lot about what natural medicine really is.
What I thought it was, when I started. And what I now know it to be.
When my journey began, it was immediately obvious that this wasn’t just doctoring with natural remedies, in the place of standard treatments. It was an entirely new way of thinking.
Sure, natural medicine is diet, lifestyle, herbs, acupuncture, homeopathy, nutritional supplements, musculoskeletal alignment, and so much more.
But those are just treatments, all aimed at one thing: healing the rift between us and nature. Between the pattern we’re stuck in and our true nature.
My mentor, Dr. Deborah Frances, taught us that our era’s collective sickness isn’t diabetes, heart disease, or cancer.
Separateness from our land and animals. From the daily and seasonal rhythms of nature. From each other. From our inner guides and sacred spirits.
And from our separateness grows disharmony, heartbreak, and disease.
Thich Nhat Hanh said, “We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness.” To me, this is the essence of natural medicine.
It isn’t really about the natural thing that heals you. It’s about the natural process and connection it awakens within you.
It’s not just an intervention of medicine. It’s a chance to experience the power of nature on a deep and personal level.
And when that happens, everything can shift. The world will never look the same.
